Their destination is California’s Monterey Peninsula, home to that most prestigious of car shows, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The 1500-mile journey will wind down through the mountains and along the coast of the Pacific Northwest on its way to this 69th edition of the Pebble Beach event.
The caravan’s official identity is The Pebble Beach Motoring Classic, a peripheral and more recently developed extension of the Concours d’Elegance anchor event. The Washington contingent will pursue an appropriately leisurely pace on their journey and are due to be at The Lodge at Pebble Beach by August 14. Their Wednesday afternoon arrival will put them in on the Monterey Peninsula in time for a different—and much briefer—drive, the Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance, which leaves the following morning. This short tour is optional, but encouraged, for entrants in the featured Concours d’Elegance and travels down scenic Highway 1 as far as Big Sur before returning to Carmel, where the cars will be displayed on Ocean Avenue before returning to Pebble Beach and what’s billed as a Champagne toast for participants.
Some of the Washington contingent may also be participating in the Sunday Concours, but entry in that event is subject to acceptance of prior applications.
