Taste Washington Travel met Dave Hannah on a recent Saturday at the “Classy Chassy” show in historic downtown Kennewick.

While attending high school in Usk, Washington, about 60 miles north of Spokane, he drove a 1958 Plymouth—an old car now, but much newer when he held its keys. After graduation, Dave spent four years in the U.S. Navy and later worked as a fleet manager for the federal government’s General Services department. He didn’t get into old cars until after his retirement.

He first restored a 1953 GMC pickup, but was intrigued by a ’28 Model A owned by one the members of his car club. “I’d always wanted an old car,” he explains, “but I had to talk the wife into it.” Apparently the 1930 Model A he acquired and restored doesn’t cause any friction in the relationship and Dave says he measures the pleasure it gives him in “smiles per mile, not miles per gallon.”

In between fielding questions from old-timers who recognize—and maybe even remember driving—Fords of this vintage, and younger folks who’re seeing a Model A for the first time, Dave begins fiddling with his iPhone. A little tweaking and he’s got original versions of tunes popular in 1930 playing through the car radio speakers, a great touch.

Dave Hannah has newer vehicles for his everyday transportation, but he might want to pursue another project. With wheels 64 (the GMC pickup) and 87 years old (his Model A), Dave is on the lookout for something even older. A Ford Model T pickup truck is on his radar screen. “Hopefully a regular beater, so I can just drive it around,” he says.
