2014 Sauvignon Blanc

“This is Sauvignon Blanc by legal definition, though an unusual wine. It’s 86% Sauvignon Blanc, but the balance is Chardonnay (10%) and Marsanne (4%).

In the United States, grape growers can—and do—grow whatever grapes they choose in whatever regions they choose. They are unfettered by government and wine industry regulations that would mandate which grapes could be grown in specific areas—and which grapes could not. Sauvignon Blanc, the subject of today’s review, is most often vinified on its own in the U.S., though it’s actually a grape variety native to France. There it makes lovely white wines in the Loire Valley and in Bordeaux, where Sauvignon Blanc is often blended with the juice from Semillon grapes.

Our Pick of the Week for November 18th, the 2014 Sauvignon Blanc from CMS in the Columbia Valley of Washington, is predominantly Sauvignon Blanc, of course, as it contains more than the required 75% of juice from that grape. However, the other constituents must be mentioned, as they make a substantial contribution to this wine. The 2014 Sauvignon Blanc from CMS has a Sauvignon Blanc nose and flavor, but the subtleties are what make the difference.  There is a richness—almost a creaminess—which we would assume comes from the Chardonnay component (10%) and the relatively small percentage of Marsanne (4%) adds to the aromatics of this wine.  So here we have a combination that never would have occurred in France, but is the product of creative Washington winemaking—and the American consumer is the beneficiary.

Food Affinity: Shellfish prepared with creamy sauces. Roasted chicken (or turkey), especially with gravy and rich side dishes.
