And most of them will be happy to pour tastes and perhaps sell a bottle or two to their visitors. Some expand those primary roles to include providing entertainment.
Such is the case with several urban wineries in downtown Walla Walla.
Kontos Cellars is anticipating that a good crowd will be helping jazz pianist Gary Hemenway celebrate his birthday on Saturday, August 3rd (the actual date is the first, but what kind of a birthday isn’t worth a couple of extra days’ partying?).
Hemenway, a long-time professional musician who teaches jazz piano at Whitman College, is having a busy summer. He recently performed in McCall, Idaho, after accompanying the Walla Walla Chorale Society on their tour of France. He’ll also appear at Bontzu Cellars in Walla Walla on Friday the 26th of July.
Assuming clement weather, the venue for the Hemenway birthday performance on August 3rd will be the patio of Kontos Cellars at 10 North Second Avenue. Gary Hemenway tells Taste Washington Travel that he plays in a variety of styles and that the evening’s program will evolve to please the tastes of those attending. He’s anticipating sharing the stage with Clairece Rosati-Hemenway, Brian Griffith and maybe a couple of other friends whose availabilities have yet to be confirmed.
Another downtown winery known for its support of the local music community is Eternal Wines, located at 9 South First Ave.
