Red Menace Amber

Hale’s Ales

Seattle, WA

Style: Amber Ale

Alcohol: 5.2%

IBUs: 9

Serving style: kegs, 12 and 22-ounce bottles

Availability: Year-round in the Pacific NW

Appearance:   “Poured from the bottle, the appearance is familiar. It looks like the product I used to enjoy at their Toproom in Seattle. What would you call the color other than the Amber in its name? Well, there is a red tinge, which makes sense given the name. Maybe mahogany would be a more apt description of the hue. The head is an off-white, nearly beige color. That head lasts a while and leaves a nice bit of lacing on the sides of my glass”.

Aroma:   “A caramel-like smell hits me in the nose, then the aroma seems more like baking bread or my Aunt Sarah’s biscuits fresh from the oven.”

Taste:   “I’d call it ‘sweet-ish’ but not really sweet. It shows what a judicious use of hops can add to get the balance you need. The texture seems full and almost creamy in the mouth. It’s just what you need on a brisk winter day like this one. In fact, I think I’ll open another one and enjoy it in front of the fire this afternoon.”

Food Affinity:   “In spite of that sweet side of its personality, I think this would go well with food. Fish and chips comes to mind, but maybe other substantial dishes, too. Lamb stew or short ribs and creamy, horseradish-infused mashed potatoes?”
