Belhaven Scottish Ale Picmonkey

Belhaven Scottish Ale

Belhaven Brewery

Dunbar, Scotland

Style: Scottish Ale

Alcohol: 5.8%

IBUs: Unknown

Serving style: 11-oz bottles, kegs

Availability: Year-round internationally

Appearance:   “Copper color with a long-lasting beige head. Some nice ‘lacing,’ too.”

Aroma:   “I’d say it’s mostly malty. There’s a nutty quality and some recognizable hop presence, but that’s pretty subtle.”

Taste:   “It reminds me a little of roasted coffee—that and some caramel. Now those descriptions might seem like a preface to talking about something big, heavy and cloying, but that’s not what’s going on here. There’s a surprisingly light and almost sprightly aspect to this beer’s personality.”

Food Affinity:  ”It’s  probably been  drunk alongside countless plates of haggis, but I couldn’t recommend that, no matter how Scottish that might seem. Now, having enjoyed Scottish salmon, I can say that might be a delightful pairing, especially if your fish were grilled or roasted, rather done in some more delicate way. It would also be very nice with some bannock and smoked salmon.”

--Guest reviewer Douglas McKechnie says that, given his heritage, he should have more familiarity with Scottish food and drink. However, he’s confident his ideas about the Belhaven are valid.
